PROGRAMS / FOR SENIORS

Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc. offers a comprehensive housing counseling program to residents of Westchester County who are age sixty or over. The program provides counseling services to clients on a one-to-one basis. The goal is to achieve a comprehensive assessment of the clients’ needs as well as to assist them in solving their individual housing or housing related issues.

The Senior Housing Assistance Program

The housing counseling component has been designed for seniors who experience housing emergencies such as rent or security shortfalls, mortgage payments problems, moving expenses and termination of utility services. In addition, WRO’s skilled counselors can help you apply for subsidized housing and obtain legal entitlements, such as the New York State Senior Citizen Rent Exemption Program, the New York State Real Property Tax Credit or Rebate Program, the Home Energy Assistance Program, as well as many other federal, state, and local programs and entitlements. We can also assist you to apply for and obtain section 8 rental subsidies as well as provide additional support when applying for assistance from other social services or government agencies.

Project SHARE

Matching senior homeowners with roommates can offer a wonderful solution to housing hardships all around. Seniors can earn extra dollars to help them remain in their homes, have companionship and find persons willing to share chores and shopping. Renters who are seeking affordable housing are offered a whole new avenue of housing opportunities not available to them before. Project SHARE has over the years brought together over 600 older homeowners or apartment dwellers with congenial renters of various ages. WRO counselors are skilled at introducing people who will get along well. These WRO “matches” have proved beneficial to both owners and renters.

Reverse Equity Mortgage Program

WRO counsels homeowners 62 years of age or older who may benefit from a Reverse Equity Mortgage. (HECM: Home Equity Conversion Mortgage) A reverse mortgage allows you to borrow against the accumulated equity in your home, and make no payments while you live in the house. If you are struggling to live on a fixed income, you could supplement your monthly income or finance home improvements while you continue to occupy your home. A WRO counselor can determine if you are eligible for a reverse mortgage, and assist you with the paperwork process of obtaining a loan from a participating bank or other financial institution.
