WRO 2021 Annual Report

Who We Are
Since 1968, Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc. (WRO) has championed the expansion of non-discriminatory housing opportunities in our region for low- and moderate-income households, minorities, senior citizens and persons with disabilities, including psychiatric disabilities. WRO is a HUD approved Housing Counseling Agency and a United Way agency. All of our housing services for consumers are free (except for credit reports and first-time Home Buying educational material) and are funded by government grants, private contributions and corporate support.

Eviction and Utility Shutoff Prevention
WRO’s counselors work with qualified tenant households to help avoid eviction or prevent the shut-off of utilities, including by making grants to cure arrears. Our team also assists housing insecure households secure rental apartments, by providing grants to pay for moving expenses, security deposit or first month’s rent.

WRO’s homeownership counseling can prepare you to buy a home.
WRO is a HUD approved housing counseling agency offering first time home buying education to potential home buyers. WRO’s Homebuying program is designed to assist potential buyers in reviewing their household’s overall financial situation and preparing them for homeownership.

Mortgage/Foreclosure Default Counseling
WRO intervenes on behalf of homeowners in danger of mortgage foreclosure and may help financially with mortgage arrears. WRO encourages homeowners to attend our Mortgage Default Orientation Sessions to learn about the process and have an opportunity for Q&A with a counselor.

Independent Living Program
WRO’s Independent Living Program assists psychiatrically disabled clients with housing issues and helps them obtain needed services.

Marketing of Affordable Housing
WRO is Westchester County’s designated Marketing Consultant for the affirmative marketing of fair and affordable housing. Our staff works with developers and owners of affordable housing units to ensure that all households have an equal opportunity to apply for units available for rent or purchase, including populations who are historically or demographically the “least likely to apply”.

Fair Housing
Where you live is your choice. Federal, state, and county fair housing laws protect you when you are looking for a place to live and while you are living in your house, co-op, condo, or apartment. WRO works to protect your rights if you live, or are looking for a place to live, in Westchester, Putnam, or Rockland counties in New York State.
